For Qatar World Cup 2022, CONCACAF Qualifiers are supposed to start this year. In 2019, the Confederation decided to change the usual format in order to make the qualifying stage more competitive.

The new format will be composed by two parts:

1º: Best six CONCACAF teams ranked by FIFA (after June 2020), will play in a Hexagonal format. Each country will play home and away, with the top three teams qualifying directly to Qatar 2022.

2º: Teams ranked 7 – 35, will be divided into eight groups (five groups of four and three groups of three). Each country will play home and away. The winner of their respective group will go to a knockout stage (quarterfinals, semifinals and final), with the champion playing against the fourth-place finisher of part 1º to determine the CONCACAF representative in the FIFA Intercontinental playoff.

At the moment, Canada is ranked Nº7 at CONCACAF (Nº73 overall). I suppose they will stay in that position since Canada has not played an international match in a while, thus, the team will have a tougher path to qualify; playing Group Stage, Knockout Stage and the FIFA Intercontinental playoff if they wish to participate in the upcoming World Cup.

Canada

Canada has a good team, especially offensively. In the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019, the most recent regional tournament, Alphonso Davies, Jonathan David, Lucas Cavallini, and Junior Hoilett proved to be an offensive threat with their pace and good communication. David was the top scorer of the competition with 6 goals, followed by Cavallini with 5. Davies did not score any goal, but provided 3 assists, sharing the number one spot with Christian Pulisic. Hoilett scored twice in the competition.

Unfortunately, the defense has to get better. During the same tournament, defensive mistakes cost Canada the chance to advance to the semifinals. They wasted a two-goal lead against Haiti, losing in the end three goals to two. They should improve their defensive awareness, pass efficiency, and practice communication to avoid silly mistakes.

Formation

In the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2019, Canada’s coach John Herdman most used formation was a 3 – 4 – 3.

In my opinion, Canada should play with a 4 – 2 – 3 – 1 or 4 – 4 – 1 – 1 formation in their pursue to participate in Qatar World Cup 2022.
